Software for fintech and regulated startups
Every month someone pulls the payments into a spreadsheet and works out why three systems do not agree about the same day. It balances in the end. Then the FCA application, or a new bank partner, asks you to prove something the product never wrote down. The one person who can answer that is the one person shipping this week.
Where it usually goes wrong
The audit wants history the ledger never kept
Your database holds what is true right now. The audit asks what the balance was on the third of March, which fee moved it, and who approved the limit that allowed it. Reconstructing that from log files, six months later, costs more than recording it would have.
The three numbers never quite match
Stripe says one number. The ClearBank or Modulr statement says another, and your own ledger says a third. The gap is a fee, a refund that settled the next day, or a rounding rule nobody wrote down. Working out which one is a job somebody does by hand, every month.
Onboarding stalls in a queue nobody owns
Onfido or Persona sends back a result. Plenty of those still need a person to read a document and make a decision. So the customer waits on the sign-up screen, and the queue belongs to whoever noticed it last.
The money path lives in one head
Why a payment retries, what happens when the TrueLayer or Plaid connection drops halfway, which rule decides a transfer is held for review. None of it is written down. The person who knows has never had to, and the second engineer takes six months to hire.
