Clio and LEAP hold the matters they were built to hold. The money starts going when a matter needs a field the system does not have. Somebody opens a spreadsheet, then a second, then an inbox rule, and a partner who knows where they live. A year on, the undertakings register and the key dates sit outside the case management system, and nobody can say what the firm holds without asking three people. What actually slows law firms
The conflict check only sees opened files
Clio, LEAP and Actionstep will search the matters that were opened. The enquiry that never became a matter is sitting in an inbox, and the client a partner met once in 2014 is in nobody's system at all. A missed conflict surfaces years later, and by then it is a negligence claim and a call to your insurer.
Privilege rules out most of the AI tools
Most firms will not put client material through a service that keeps a copy, trains on it, or moves it somewhere they cannot name in writing. That removes almost every off-the-shelf AI product before you have compared a single feature. Whatever is left has to sit somewhere you can point at when a client asks.
The precedent everyone uses is in an old matter
The precedent bank holds the 2019 version. The clause the team actually uses is in a matter from two years ago, and it gets found by asking whoever drafted it. iManage returns what was filed properly, and SharePoint keeps the rest under names ending in final_v2.

One domain model, one API, one person holding all of it. Software shaped to how you already work, rather than a process reshaped to fit somebody's product roadmap. It runs on infrastructure in your accounts, and you are never locked to me to keep it running.

- What it does, what it deliberately does not do, and what milestone one is. Agreed in writing before a line is written, so there is a fixed thing to hold me to instead of a moving target.
- One model of your business, not three
- A customer is one thing everywhere in the system. Most of the pain in software that has grown by accident comes from three parts of it disagreeing about what a customer is.
- Keys, servers and docs in your accounts
- The deployment, the domain and the environment variables move to you at the end. You can hand the whole thing to another engineer and they will be able to pick it up.

I got my hands on a computer at 6 and never really stopped.
Now it is decentralised finance, tokenising real-world assets and topological deep learning, then building whatever those turn into. Continuum came out of that. So did Delta Xi (δξ, an infinitesimal change in a random variable).
Bossa nova and MPB were always on at home, so I sang before I played anything. Guitar and piano came later, then jazz.
